UT is home to a vibrant Asian population, with not only students but also faculty and staff.
The Asian/Asian American Faculty & Staff Association (AAAFSA) held its fall welcome reception on September 16 at the Texas Union on campus. AAAFSA is a campus-wide organization that builds relationships and provides a voice for members.
The luncheon was a great success with the largest turnout since the organization began in 2006.
“It’s grown, and it was so small before,” said Rowena Fong, a professor at the UT School of Social Work. “In 2006 when I started it we were like where are the Asians? I’m really delighted … it’s wonderful to see the mixing there [of different Asian groups].”
There was a lot of excitement about a membership match UT Human Resources department just announced.
“We have a huge membership drive. Hopefully we can have more fundraising events; with more members we can do more,” said Alex Pong, AAAFSA webmaster. We want to partner with more groups in Austin as well as other minority groups on campus.”
Ge Chen, Assistant Vice-President of the Division of Diversity & Community Engagement, is president of AAAFSA. Goals for the organization this year include providing more educational opportunities, panel discussions and leadership development for community members, she said.
AAAFSA also connects UT and the greater Austin community and several community guests introduced themselves including Esther Chung of the Austin History Center, Masashi Niwano of the Austin Asian American Film Festival, Raman Sandhu of SAHELI and Yvonne Lim Wilson of Asian Austin.
